To become a doctor you must follow the “medicine” course and choose a specialization. The study of medicine is the longest training in the Netherlands. The study is also very intensive. You will spend most of your week studying, teaching assignments, practicals and lectures. How long it takes before you can start working as a doctor depends on the specialization you choose.
Phases in doctor training
The training for doctors consists of the following components:
A 3-year bachelor’s degree. The basic theory is central to the bachelor’s degree program. You learn how the body functions and what diseases there are. You also have regular contact with patients, for example in lectures.
A subsequent 3-year master’s degree. The master’s degree focuses on the application of knowledge in practice. So you get more contact with patients. At the end of the master’s degree, you will run “co-shelves”. This consists of practical internships in hospitals and general practice, but also, for example, in social medicine including insurance medicine, occupational medicine, and youth medicine. You can choose your last fellowship yourself in a field of your choice. You will be a basic doctor by completing the master
As a medical doctor, you have to specialize.
Admission to the bachelor of medicine
You can register for the course via Studielink. The latest registration date is January 15.
With a bachelor of medicine, you are immediately admitted to the master of medicine. Unfortunately, the number of places for the bachelor of medicine is limited. Are too many students applying for the fixed course? Then you must participate in a selection for a place. The educational institution does this selection procedure itself. No more draws.
Maximum 2 applications per academic
year You can register for a maximum of 2 fixed programs per academic year. This may be the same course at 2 different educational institutions. An exception applies to the studies in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and oral care. Here you can only choose 1 educational institution.
Participate in abroad
Do you want to participate in the selection procedure from abroad? Then ask the educational institution about the possibilities.
3 attempts to fix training selection
You may participate in a maximum of 3 times in the selection procedure of a study program. But it varies per institution how often you can participate in their selection. A university can, therefore, arrange that someone may only participate once in the selection procedure at that institution.
